2006 Toyota RAV4 Test Drive

In keeping with its revamped butch persona, the '06 RAV4 has made its new 268hp, 3.5L V-6 available as an option. It comes with a 5-speed auto. I didn't drive the V-6 and I'm not sure I want to. Frankly, I don't believe an engine that powerful is even desirable in a vehicle that will primarily be used as a city family runabout.

Unless you live in a rural area and plan to use your RAV4 as a working vehicle towing a boat or a horse trailer long distances you'll find the fuel efficient 166 hp, VVT- i, aluminum alloy inline-4 will have all the power you need. It comes paired with a 4-speed auto or 5-speed manual.

Thanks in part to the new multi-link rear suspension, handling is excellent for a vehicle of this size and (3500 lb) weight. Straight-line tracking is first rate. While it's quite tall, there's very little body lean in the corners. The ride can get a tad bouncy on uneven surfaces, however.

An amazing 4WD system is new for '06. An electromagnetic clutch replaces the old viscous coupling. Sensors distribute torque (up to 45%) to the rear wheels before wheel slippage even starts. This and standard electronic stability control should keep you between the white lines if you find yourself in over your head in slippery corners.
